Samsung may have won the HBM4 technology race — but the real battle could be starting now. $AMD
A quick recap:
Back on February 12, Samsung announced the world’s first mass production of HBM4, built on its 6th-gen 1c DRAM process alongside a 4nm logic base die. That immediately put pressure on competitors in the AI memory race.
By early May, reports confirmed Samsung successfully cleared final HBM4 validation with AMD and additional partners. Supply ramp discussions for the second half of the year quickly followed.
That changes the competitive landscape.
If Samsung scales HBM4 smoothly, competitors currently dominating the space with more than 65% market share could see that lead narrow toward the 50–60% range.
Big tech firms like Microsoft, Google, and Amazon are already exploring advance capacity agreements elsewhere — a strong signal that hyperscalers are becoming increasingly cautious about supplier concentration.
But Samsung now faces a different kind of risk.
Labor negotiations involving more than 50,000 workers have officially stalled, and unions announced plans for an 18-day strike beginning May 21.
That timing matters.
HBM4 is entering one of the most critical production windows right after qualification success. Any disruption could impact supply timelines and potentially force competitors to adjust GB300-related production planning for the second half of the year.
The bigger takeaway:
A technological breakthrough does not eliminate risk — it often creates an entirely new layer of operational pressure.
Samsung may have secured an edge in the HBM4 race, but the next question is whether production execution can keep pace once scale truly begins.
